What’s Tim Taking? Costco, Coltrane, and Combat Tactics?

Welcome back! Whether you loved the first edition or just didn’t hate it enough to leave, I promise not to waste these next 3–4 precious minutes of your time.

As I explained last time, each edition explores a few bite-sized chunks of things I’m consuming, like books & articles, food & restaurants, stocks & investments, entertainment & music, gadgets, quotes, and everything in between.

Investment Insights*

A close friend recently turned me on to the Acquired podcast, where the hosts dive into the origins and strategies of major businesses like Costco. Despite retail being a tough industry to invest in with any meaningful return, this fabled company has been printing returns above and beyond the S&P 500 average for decades. It’s no accident either—the company’s founders and leadership are genius operators.

While I don’t own this stock today, I’m definitely keeping my eye on buying opportunities. With market uncertainty rising around tariffs and recession fears, this may be a pivotal moment for investors. Any business that can outperform in both recessionary AND expansionary / inflationary market conditions is worthy of attention. Not to mention, the late, great Charlie Munger raved about this company as one of his all-time favorites.

If you are into long-form podcasts with deep analysis, this one’s for you. If you’re more into tech than retail, I highly recommend the 2-part episode on Microsoft, or the Meta episode.

Reading Corner

Leadership Strategy and Tactics: Field Manual Expanded Edition by Jocko Willink

Jocko’s latest leadership manual presents a clear and actionable framework for developing the skills and mindset necessary to lead any team to success. The book doubles down on all of Jocko’s core tenants—the importance of taking ownership, executing with discipline, and fostering a culture of accountability—using his direct experiences as the backdrop for his narrative.

I’m almost a full year into a new role as a Manager, where I’ve encountered a wide variety of “firsts” in rapid succession. This book has been incredibly helpful in learning how to be patient and aware enough to detach from a problem, check egos, and lead from different positions on the battlefields of business and sales.

Documentary I’m (Re)Watching

If you’ve never seen one of Ken Burns’ legendary PBS documentaries, you’re missing out. I’m currently re-watching his 10-episode masterpiece on Jazz. Beyond its masterful storytelling, it’s also incredibly soothing for unwinding and falling asleep.

The true gems are the musicians and personalities he interviews. One quote stood out from the renowned clarinetist Artie Shaw, when describing the influence of Louis Armstrong:

“And so I was obsessed with the idea that this was what you had to do. Something that was your own, that had nothing to do with anybody else … Not in terms of notes … but in terms of doing what you are, who you are.” — Artie Shaw

This really struck me as the core of what I’m aiming for in my own creative pursuits. I used to think creativity was reserved for great artists or gifted musicians. But I’ve come to realize it lives quietly in all of us—waiting to be awakened, expressed, and shared.

Quote of the Week:

Speaking of quotes from Jazz legends, it feels fitting to double down with my favorite Coltrane quote here as well:

“Damn the rules, it’s the feeling that counts. You play all twelve notes in your solo anyway.” — John Coltrane

I discovered this on a billboard when I first moved to LA, an especially transformational time in my life. Who cares what anyone thinks about your creation? So what if they don’t like it? If it feels right to you, that’s all that matters.

Thanks for sticking around, see you next time!
