What’s Tim Taking? Spam Shields, Sore Backs, and Stories That Stick

Welcome back! We’ve made it to #3, let’s keep it rolling with new discoveries. As always, I promise to make the next 3-4 minutes of your time 100% worth it.

Each edition of What’s Tim Taking explores a few bite-sized chunks of things I’m consuming, like books & articles, food & restaurants, stocks & investments, entertainment & music, gadgets, quotes, and everything in between.

Reading Corner

In my quest for quality over quantity this year, I decided to take on a modern American classic, The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles.

This coming-of-age fiction tale chronicles the cross-country trip of two brothers, Emmett and Billy Watson. Their plans for a fresh start in California are upended by the sudden reappearance of two fellow juvenile offenders who escape after Emmett’s early release.

Each chapter is told through the point of view of various characters for an unforgettable multi-perspective adventure. The prose will bring you to your knees in appreciation that authors are still capable of writing this way.

Discovering Towles’ CBS interview midway through reading offered a fascinating insight into his move from finance – a surprisingly relatable parallel. This unexpected connection has ignited my desire to read more of his books.

Tech Tools

The internet can be awesome, but it can also piss me off to no end. Signing up for worthless websites to consume one piece of content drives me (and my email inbox) insane.

No need to fear—Temp Mail is here.

Temp Mail will generate a temporary email address for use on website registrations, so you can avoid the spam and PII (personally identifiable information) sharing.

If this is too high tech for you, there’s always your old @aol.com email to the rescue.

Geezer Gadget

As I’ve gotten older, lower back pain has been a persistent issue, even with proactive measures like a good mattress, supportive shoes, a standing desk, and regular stretching.

I recently invested in the Hyperice Venom 2. Despite a hefty price tag, this wearable device delivers targeted heat and vibration, effectively melting away lower back tension and soreness. I’ve been using it in the morning before workouts, throughout the work day, and at night on the couch. A super convenient and effective solution if you can spare the shekels.

Quote of the Week

“If you don’t explore the outer perimeter, how else will you know where the line is?” – Will Guidara from the book, Unreasonable Hospitality: The Remarkable Power of Giving People More Than They Expect

Being comfortable with discomfort and pushing oneself to the edge of our limitations is the only way we grow. If you’re finding yourself in stagnation, it might mean it’s time to try something new. Take a risk if you’re in a cycle of low rewards. Fail forward.
